Batteries to Bluffs Trail - Natural Habitat
Near the start of the trail, you'll reach a set of stairs -- one of several sets you'll descend along the Batteries to Bluffs Trail.
If you have an interest in the nature and animals, you'll see and hear a variety of birds in the scrub habitat along the way. The hillside here has faced challenges from non-native species that threatened to overwhelm the natural habitat.
Part of the Trails Forever project (Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy with Presidio Trust) is removing non-native vegetation to allow the native plants and animals to flourish.
Golden Gate National Parks - Trails Forever
Trails Forever was launched in 2003 to improve trails and protect the Golden Gate National Park areas in the San Francisco Bay Area.
If you're interested in volunteering with Trails Forever, you can be involved in restoration activities from wildlife observation to landscaping to trail maintenance among other projects. Click here for information on the volunteer program.
