Lani's Beach at Richardson Bay
The nature trail begins up the hill, behind Lyford House. Before embarking on the hike, venture down to the Lani's Beach area for a view of the bay and the many migrating and resident birds that make the bay their home.
Because San Francisco Bay is on the Pacific Flyway, winter is a vibrant time to check out the mud flats, wetlands and waterways of the bay. Species you'll see in the winter include: a variety of ducks, grebes, scoters, cormorants, pelicans, terns and many others.
Richardson Bay Audubon & San Francisco Oil Spill
When the Cosco Busan oil spill hit San Francisco Bay in November of 2007, Richardson Bay Audubon was among the very dedicated wildlife organizations involved in rescue of the oiled birds.
Because Richardson Bay Audubon has been conducting detailed environmental and wildlife studies in the area, they are in a unique position to document the spill's aftermath on bird populations and habitat

Note to new bird watchers and wildlife photographers: Harassing birds in any way violates the Migratory Bird Act and carries fines. Seeing amazing wildlife is one of the most enjoyable aspects of being out on the trails. Just be sure to be respectful of all birds and wildlife, give them plenty of space -- and use a long lens if you're photographing.
