As you turn right on Conzelman Road from the main parking lot, you'll walk past the U.S. Coast Guard Station Golden Gate.

The first such rescue service in San Francisco -- the U.S. Life Saving Service -- was established in 1877. The Life Saving Service later became part of the Coast Guard, with several posts throughout the area.

The Coast Guard Station pictured here has been at Fort Baker since 1990. The station and vessels were previously at Fort Point across the Bay. That particular station was decommission in 1990, and operations moved to Fort Baker.
