Go to: San Francisco Photos
Continue past the Warming Hut and Torpedo Wharf on your right. If you like, take a stroll on the wharf for a nice photo op of the bridge and the city behind you.
You'll pass some public restrooms on the left, and will see Fort Point ahead. On the left (pictured above) is an access point to the California Coastal Trail which will take you up to the Golden Gate Bridge.
The trail is not dangerous or terribly steep, but it is a short climb before it levels off at Battery East -- one of several batteries in the Presidio and among many in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Bay Area fortifications are part of the historic Coastal Defense System.
You'll have another easy ascent as you approach the parking area of the south view point at the Golden Gate Bridge.
The Coastal Trail is a network of walking, biking and equestrian trails, currently under construction (and partially completed) along the California coast.
As you follow the trail, you'll have a higher vantage point for various vistas, including a view to Fort Point -- a structure built in the Gold Rush years, which served as an armed deterrent at the Golden Gate during the Civil War, and later became barracks before it was ultimately restored as a National Historic Site.
The trail ultimately lands at the toll plaza on the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge.
