Note to wildlife watchers: Areas like Crissy Field marsh are sensitive bird habitat. It would seem common sense not to harass birds or allow children to chase them. But I've witnessed this enough time in public parks, it's worth mentioning. Harassing birds in any way violates the Migratory Bird Act and carries fines.
A Great Egret navigates low tide near the pedestrian walkway in Crissy Marsh. The Bay Area is home to many Great Egrets and Snowy Egrets.
The easiest distinction between the two birds is bill color and leg color. Great Egrets have yellow bills and black legs -- and are usually larger than Snowy Egrets. Snowy Egrets have black bills with black and yellow legs.

Note to new bird watchers and wildlife photographers: Areas like Crissy Field marsh are sensitive bird habitats. Harassing birds in any way violates the Migratory Bird Act and carries fines. Seeing amazing wildlife is one of the most enjoyable aspects of being out on the trails. Just be sure to be respectful of all birds and wildlife, give them plenty of space -- and use a long lens if you're photographing.
