Enter the unlocked gate to Crissy Marsh and cross the foot bridge. Depending on the time of year, the tide, and other conditions, you'll see a variety of birds -- including migrating ducks and shorebirds that winter here in the Bay Area.

Crissy Marsh, 20 acres of tidal marsh, is the result of a major wetlands restoration project which converted the Presidio's former terrain of asphalt and non-native vegetatio, into this thriving habitat for marine life and shorebirds.

The next photo shows a Great Egret stalking prey in Crissy Marsh, just under the pedestrian walkway.

Note to new bird watchers and wildlife photographers: Areas like Crissy Field marsh are sensitive bird habitats. Harassing birds in any way violates the Migratory Bird Act and carries fines. Seeing amazing wildlife is one of the most enjoyable aspects of being out on the trails. Just be sure to be respectful of all birds and wildlife, give them plenty of space -- and use a long lens if you're photographing.
