About Hayward Shoreline:
Hayward Shoreline is more than 1600 acres of marsh lands and public walking and biking trails.
It's one of the best places in the Bay Area to see a variety of birds, especially in the winter when migrating species flock to the hospitable habitat of the Hayward wetlands.
Five miles of trails are available for walking, running or biking. A large section of the trail parallels the bay which, on clear days, provides a stellar view north and west toward San Francisco.
Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center:
Interpretive Center Hours: 10a to 5p
4901 Breakwater Avenue
Hayward, CA 94545
Telephone: (510) 670-7270
Located at the south end of Hayward Shoreline, at the east side of the San Mateo Bridge/Highway 92
The Interpretive Center is a good first stop for an initial visit to the Hayward Shoreline. Inside you'll find photo displays, changing exhibits, and information on some of the animals and birds found in the wetland areas -- as well as current updates on recently seen species. Nature programs for children run throughout the year.
The center also has a book shop and public restrooms.
Walking the Hayward Shoreline:
If you're interested in bird watching, bring a good pair of binoculars since many of the protected habitat areas are difficult to study with the naked eye.
Start at the Interpretive Center and take the main path west toward the bay. Along the way you'll parallel a slough and number of wetland areas where you're likely to see shorebirds like Willets and Marbled Godwits, along with egrets, herons and other birds that frequent marsh habitats.
The path is a wide dirt path suitable for walkers and bikers. You can stroll for miles along the marsh, across foot bridges, and beside the bay.
Rules & Restrictions:
Because many of the areas throughout the Hayward Shoreline are protected habitat for nesting and feeding species, observe all restriction signs and stay on designated paths.
For habitat protection, dogs are not allowed south of the West Winton Avenue flood control channel (see Trail Map for location).
