Father’s Day is Sunday, June 19, 2011--a prime opportunity to show your appreciation for the dads or father-figures in your life. Here are some ways to do that in San Francisco. All of the events below are on June 19 unless otherwise noted.
San Francisco Black Film Festival’s “My Dad is My Hero” Contest
Entry deadline June 10. Ceremony June 19 at 3 pm
The 2011 San Francisco Black Film Festival invites people of all ages to enter videos or essays honoring their fathers or father-figures, living or deceased, as their heroes. Entries must be received by June 10. The winning fathers will be recognized June 19. With the theme “The Trajectory of the Black Family Through Film,” the June 17-19 festival shows documentaries, kids’ fare, dramas and features whose filmmakers, screenwriters and actors are of African descent.

Bring your bike and follow a docent on a 90-minute bike tour of the zoo before the crowds show up. Continental breakfast follows.

Free Day at MoAD
12-5 pm
Free admission in honor of Juneteenth and Father's Day. Music by Marcus Shelby Trio, storytelling, and workshops on how to collect oral history and on free-association poetry for families.

Stern Grove Festival

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings opens the 2011 series of summer concerts and performances at Stern Grove. The English Beat, San Francisco Symphony, Ballet and Opera, Aaron Neville and others appear on subsequent Sundays through Aug. 21.

Soap-On-A-Rope: What We Gave Our Fathers and What They Gave Us

An evening of storytelling dedicated to fathers: Four solo performers tell their honest yet hilarious tales that reminisce about fatherhood and grandfatherhood in San Francisco, father-son bonding, and why every man needs a daughter. Part of the Previously Secret Information storytelling series.

East 14th: True Tales of a Reluctant Player

Don Reed's rollicking one-man show about growing up in 1970s East Oakland and living with his hip dad--not realizing dad was a pimp.

Father's Day Brunch and Dinner Specials
Restaurants are serving buffet brunches and prix fixe meals and adding lots of steak to their menus for Father’s Day. Open Table lists their specials and allows you to make reservations.
Father's Day Brunch and Dinner Cruises
Two-hour Father’s Day Beer Brunch Cruises depart from San Francisco, Berkeley and Old Sacramento and include buffet spreads with bottomless beer and Champagne. A Father’s Day Dinner Dance Cruise from San Francisco includes a four-course dinner and live music during a 2.5-hour ride.

Napa Valley Wine Train
Leisurely lunch or dinner as the train chugs 36 miles in three hours, from Napa through the valley of vineyards to St. Helena and back.
