The Tarantula Trek and Trails
The Mt. Diablo State Park Tarantula Trek begins at Mitchell Canyon Visitor Center and is approximately a mile and a half. The hike itself takes about two hours, following an introductory discussion about tarantulas at the visitor center.
The hike is not strenuous but it's moderate in the sense that you'll do some gradual climbs as you ascend toward tarantula territory. The tarantula trek is suitable for adults or children who can handle the physical distance.
Numbers vary, but the group on our particular tour was large -- fifty or so participants.
What to Bring
Jacket or sweater: You may not need cover but bring a light jacket in the car, just in case.
Hikers or walking shoes: Urban hikers or good walking shoes are perfect on the mostly dirt trail. There's nothing to rigorous or treacherous to require heavy duty boots.
Water: Bring a bottle of water and anything else you personally need for sustenance during those two hours.
Camera: Photo opportunities range from close-ups of the tarantulas, to wild turkeys and other animals or birds, as well as the beautiful vistas of Mt. Diablo State Park as you follow the trail.
Amenities
The starting point of the tarantula trek is at the open visitor center which has displays, trail maps and other items relating to Mt. Diablo State Park.
Bathrooms are available at the staging area, prior to the trek.
