San Francisco Ferry Building - Photos
The San Francisco Ferry Building anchors the Embarcadero area between the southward stretches of SoMa/South of Market and the northward promenade which takes you to Fisherman's Wharf.
The Ferry Building was once at the center of commuter traffic from other areas of the Bay -- before the construction of both the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge which ushered in the era of car commuting.
Through the years, the San Francisco Ferry Building suffered for some remodeling which covered its mosaic floors and otherwise altered some of its historic detail. When the section of freeway over the Embarcadero was torn down after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the revitalization of the area began. Renovation of the Ferry Building to its artistic splendor was completed in 2003.
