Cooper's Hawk
This Cooper's Hawk was photographed from a distance, in the Palo Alto Baylands, and is one of many species found in the refuge throughout the year and -- even more abundantly -- in the winter months.
Some bird species visitors might see at the Baylands:
- Pelicans
- Migrating winter ducks (scaup, northern shovelers, cinnamon teals, etc.)
- Raptors/hawks like red-tailed hawks, northern harriers, cooper's hawks
- Shorebirds (willets, marbled godwits, long-billed curlews, american avocets)
- Herons and egrets
- A variety of passerines
----------------
Note to new bird watchers and wildlife photographers: Areas like the Palo Alto Baylands are sensitive bird habitats. Harassing birds in any way violates the Migratory Bird Act and carries steep fines and can even incur jail time. Seeing amazing wildlife is one of the most enjoyable aspects of being out on the trails. Just be sure to be respectful of all birds and wildlife, and give them adequate space -- and use a long lens if you're photographing.
