Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve
The Palo Alto Baylands are 2000 acres of park, marsh and trails east of Stanford University. The Baylands are a mix of developed areas and trails -- and habitat for thousands of resident and migrating birds and other wildlife.
An environmental victory saved the Baylands from mall and housing development in the 1950s. As a result, Bay Area residents enjoy the largest tract of undisturbed wetlands along San Francisco Bay -- a treasure when you consider that 90 percent of San Francisco's original wetlands are now gone.
If you're visiting Palo Alto Baylands for the first time, start at the Lucy Evans Baylands Nature Interpretive Center for information and trail maps. It's located at the east end of Embarcadero Road, about a mile east of the 101 freeway.
