In 1887, the Balclutha sailed her maiden voyage to San Francisco from Wales in 140 days. The ship was a cargo transport, beginning with grain trade between Europe and San Francisco. The Balclutha later called at other ports and was eventually transferred to the Hawaiian registry. The San Francisco Maritime Museum bought and restored the ship in 1954.
