The Sutro Baths were lavish pools and a recreation destination dreamed up by Adolph Sutro, a major landowner in late 1800s San Francisco.

There were seven pools filled with sea water of varying temperatures -- hundreds of dressing rooms -- slides, swings, water wheels, competitions.

The baths closed permanently in 1966 and the structure burned down during demolition shortly thereafter.

Only ruins remain today, as seen from above at the Cliff House. But it's also a place to see ducks and seabirds, as well as beautiful sunsets with the Cliff House lights reflected in the pools.

You can hike down to the ruins, or visit the landmark as part of a Lands End Trail walk. It's a popular stop for the photography groups you'll see once in a while, clustered with their tripods.

Find more information about the baths at sutrobaths.com.

Across the street you'll find Sutro Heights Park where Adolph Sutro created his Victorian estate.
