China Beach - San Francisco
China Beach, with a view to the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands, the marker describes how the beach acquired its name from the fact that Chinese fisherman used the area as a campsite.
According to the Western Neighborhoods Project which documents some history of the area, the marker isn't entirely accurate -- that the beach was known for much longer as Phelan Beach, after the Chinese were expelled from the area.
You can read more on this aspect of China Beach history at the Western Neighborhoods Project website.
