Battery Chester at Fort Miley - San Francisco
Fort Miley was built at the turn of the 20th century, as part of the defense of San Francisco Bay. The Veterans Administration Hospital sits where the army buildings used to stand. But you can roam about the remains of the batteries constructed on the hill as part of the seacoast defense of San Francisco Bay.
In addition to the items of historical interest, the area around Fort Miley is a spot to enjoy a view of Ocean Beach with a few places to plant yourself with lunch or a snack.
Read more about Fort Miley's history, as well as history of San Francisco's batteries -- at the National Park Service Fort Miley website.
