The new span of the San Francisco Bay Bridge (the East Span) will connect Oakland to Yerba Buena Island with advanced seismic construction. Caltrans determined that building a new span was more cost effective than seismically retrofitting the old bridge.
The design will take into account a wider range of ground motion in an effort to enhance the bridge's safety during future earthquakes.
