Whimbrel

Whimbrels are large shorebirds you'll see clustered among flocks of Willets, Marbled Godwits and Long-billed Curlews. The curved design of a Whimbrel's bill makes it an exceptional crabber -- a mainstay of the Whimbrel diet in many parts along its migrating route.

You'll start seeing a diverse group of shorebirds in late August and September in the Bay Area, with numbers that culminate in the winter months.
