Killdeer

The Killdeer is in the plover family -- a designation familiar to anyone who frequents San Francisco parks and beaches. The Snowy Plover is endangered and protected throughout the Bay Area, with signs to that effect posted in various marshlands, beaches and plover habitat areas.

One of the most interesting behaviors in the Killdeer is its broken wing fake -- where the Killdeer pretends at an injured wing to lure predators away from the nest.
