San Francisco Oil Spill - How to Help

Several organizations are involved in oiled bird and wildlife rescue, as well as beach and shoreline cleanup. Please see the About San Francisco home page for current information on upcoming cleanup training sessions.

And see How to Help - San Francisco Oil Spill Cleanup for details on what you can do to volunteer with oiled wildlife rescue, help beach cleanup, or assist with other oil spill remediation efforts.

Bay Area Closed Beaches - Updated November 17, 2007

Sources: U.S. Coast Guard | East Bay Regional Parks

See a list of local telephone numbers for updates on beach openings and closures.

The red arrows on the map indicate the trajectory of the oil spill, following the collision on the west span of the San Francisco Bay Bridge.

Even as beaches reopen, they may be closed intermittently for bird rescue or if oil returns. Please continue to keep dogs away from beaches and areas where oiled and injured birds maybe stranded. If oiled birds are spooked back into the water, they cannot be rescued and will mostly likely die.
