Miwok, Coast Miwok

by Ingrid Taylar
for About.com

Definition:

The Coast Miwok were native peoples, who, like the Ohlone, inhabited the San Francisco Bay Area prior to the arrival of the Spaniards.

Coast Miwok people were hunter/gatherers, living in villages within what are now Marin and Sonoma Counties. As would be expected with coastal communities, the ocean was a primary food source for the Miwok who hunted water fowl, seals and otters, and also fished and trapped crabs and crustaceans.

At the Bear Valley Visitor Center (Highway 1 at Olema), you can see a replica of a Coast Miwok village, and explore trails through the lands the Miwok called home.
