The Bottom Line

Zazie Website

Zazie is known for its weekend brunch. The lines will attest to the popularity of Zazie’s gingerbread pancakes and egg scrambles. My favorite time to patronize Zazie is in the off hours, when I can find a seat on their lovely back patio, and enjoy a book with my Rooibos iced tea.

Guide Review - Zazie in Cole Valley

    Zazie Ambiance

Zazie is one of those places I don’t mean to keep patronizing. I’m sure the staff doesn’t want to hear that. It’s just that there are many restaurants where I should eat a few more times before I do a repeat at a fave like Zazie. I can’t help myself. I can barely make it to the park without disembarking on Cole and hopping into my favorite bistro for a light meal.

Zazie has outdoor seating on the sidewalk, and in a back garden patio. Seating on the patio is tight, so be prepared to squeeze between tables. Once settled, however, the atmosphere on a sunny day is cozy and refreshing – shade and fresh air. The staff is friendly and attentive. And Cole Valley itself has a comfy, neighborhood feel, just blocks from the busy scene on Haight Street.

    Zazie Food

Zazie draws a crowd for its breakfast. I love eating out for breakfast but I admit to avoiding a queue where I can. So, my personal favorite time at Zazie is after the weekday lunch crowds disperse, or on a late afternoon on a weekend, when I can relax with the mid-day menu and some reading. Zazie serves Rooibos iced tea – delicate in flavor and rich with antioxidants.

The menu changes daily, with specials and les plats de jour. Regular items like the BLT Provençal offer a bistro twist on an old classic with goat cheese and aioli on foccacia. If you like Niçoise, you can get a traditional or vegetarian version. Croque Monsieur with Gruyere, and Croque Madame are on the menu, as are specials like salmon and trout dishes.

The Zazie wine list features predominantly French and California wines, as well as dessert wines, with quite a few selections by the glass. You can also prime the taste buds with a Lillet or Dubonnet apertif.

2007 - Prices, items and events subject to change. Check with venue directly for information and updates.
