The Bottom Line

The beauty of Red's Java House: It is what it is. There's no attitude, no frills, just a burger shack on the Bay with basic menu items, soda, and beer. Don't expect a manicured patio or table service. But that's why you go to Red's -- to pare it back down to the basics and to pay less than ten bucks for your food.

Pros

  • Cheap eats and very casual atmosphere
  • Waterfront, easy access to points on the Embarcadero
  • Personable counter staff makes you comfortable, even if you're new

Cons

  • Outdoor patio doesn't have much shade

Description

Guide Review - Red's Java House

Red's Food

People go to Red's for any number of reasons, but two oft-stated motivations are breakfast and burgers. A loyal following swears by Red's burgers. Other people shy away from Red's less traditional presentation which involves a thin meat patty on a roll instead of a bun. You'll have to decide for yourselves. Besides, I've been nudged previously toward the fish and chips (for a few bucks) and that suits me fine for a quick hit of fast food.

A sane and sound rationale for stopping at Red's is to take a load off the feet when walking along the Embarcadero, to get some still-reasonably-priced cheap eats in San Francisco, and to appreciate a San Francisco icon that's been in place since the 1920s . . . even if AT&T Park and the gentrification of SoMa has changed the complexion of Red's clientele along with the neighborhood. Some people like the change, some don't. I would say if you're in the latter category, at least avoid the game-day bar crowd.

Red's Ambiance

Red's is a bare bones joint, with a scrappy but popular back patio and a view to the Bay Bridge. There's no feng shui design involved -- the ambiance is Bay salt air, the birds checking in for a free snack, and the traffic rolling across the Bay Bridge. I personally like patios with a bit more shade, but then I'm one of those people who thinks 75 is too warm. And I burn without 100spf. The sunny outdoor space is a selling point among Red's fans who can grab a beer or a Bloody Mary and watch the seagulls swoop in for fries.
