The Bottom Line

Ferry Plaza Seafood Website

Ferry Plaza Seafood is a favorite and regular stop for me at the Ferry Building. They offer a simple but fresh menu of local seafood: oysters, chowder, crab salads and sandwiches . . . and a view to the indoor and outdoor activity of the Ferry Building.

Sample Menu Prices (2007):

  • Cup of New England Clam Chowder: $4.75
  • Small Crab Louis Salad: $13.00
  • Smoked Salmon Plate: $13.00
  • Shrimp Sandwich: $12.25

Pros

  • Fresh seafood and great clam chowder (New England & Manhattan)
  • View to the Bay, to the ferries and to people watching
  • Friendly service, casual and comfortable atmosphere
  • Outdoor enclosed patio facing the water

Cons

  • Crowded during the Saturday Farmers Market
  • No table seating indoors, but comfortable bar stools at the counter

Description

Guide Review - Ferry Plaza Seafood

Ferry Plaza Seafood - Ambiance

Ferry Plaza Seafood faces the Ferry Terminal, so if you’re sitting outside, you can enjoy the shelter of a glass-enclosed patio while watching colorful ferry traffic and the Ferry Building’s crowds . . . and overlooking San Francisco Bay.

The indoor seating is a row of cushioned bar stools arranged along a marble counter. The counter is in an enclave, set away from the foot traffic moving through the area. The environment is café-style -- casual and comfortable, with attentive and friendly service.

Ferry Plaza Seafood - Menu

I always go for the clam chowder, and enjoy both the Manhattan and New England styles served here. The New England is flavorful and not too rich; the Manhattan has a nice bite of spice.

The crab and shrimp I’ve eaten have always been spectacularly fresh. Ferry Plaza Seafood sells local fish, delivered to their small market throughout the day. The Louis salads can be ordered with crab or shrimp or both. The same is true of the seafood cocktails.

The Smoked Salmon Plate has two varieties of smoked fish, including the thicker, Northwest style that is my favorite. Ferry Plaza Seafood also serves crab and shrimp sandwiches with their own blend of garnishes, plus clams, oysters and seasonal whole Dungeness crab (November to May).

Ferry Plaza Seafood - Wine

For a small café, Ferry Plaza has a decent number of wine varieties, with all wines available by the bottle or the glass. The reds are primarily from California (with one Washington Merlot), whereas the whites are mixed to include a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, an Italian Pinot Grigio among others.

Beer selections are Anchor Steam, Sierra Pale Ale, Sapporo and Amstel Light.

2007 - Prices, items and events are subject to change. Always check with venue directly for current information.
