Guide Review - Colibri Mexican Bistro

Colibri Bar

If you’ve read other reviews posted here at About San Francisco, you’ll know I’m a tequila fan. I won’t say aficionado. That would be overselling my abilities. But I love a smooth tequila, and if a margarita is made pure -- just lime juice tequila and a touch of sweetness -- I’m a margarita fan, too.

So, I’ll start by saying I like Colibri’s margaritas -- not too sweet. The bar at Colibri is a comfortable place to sit. The crowd is a mix of locals, theater goers and tourists, so it’s not the kind of place you’ll feel the heat as a single patron. I had my book and felt at home with other patrons doing the same thing.

Colibri Tortilla Soup & Guacamole

A gentleman at the opposite end of the bar ordered a tortilla soup. It came as cluster of avocado chunks, cheese, tortilla strips, and pot of creamy soup on the side which the waiter poured over the cluster. Within minutes, another patron, seeing the soup, ordered some for herself. By the end of my visit, the chain reaction had worked its way down to our end of the bar, where my dining friends said it was one of the better bowls they'd had.

My personal favorite, the Colibri guacamole is made at the table and served with handmade tortillas. Other popular menu items: fire-roasted Chile Relleno and the Mole Poblano.

Colibri Menu & Ambiance

Colibri starts with classic dishes and adds French and Spanish flavors. Most dishes are small plates to sample and share. Colibri has booths and table seating. Some spots are more cozy and comfortable than others. Tables near the kitchen, get a lot of foot traffic.
