German immigrant Johan Spenger opened Spenger's Fish Grotto in 1890. Spenger was a fisherman who eventually acquired his own fleet and then opened his popular seafood restaurant. Spenger's has hosted celebrities over the years, including Errol Flynn, Spencer Tracy and Betty Grable. It's owned today by McCormick and Schmick's.
