Updated 2008: Cody's Books closed permanently in the spring of 2008. This was the last long-term location of the bookstore which briefly moved to Shattuck Avenue (downtown Berkeley) before shutting its doors for good.
Cody's Books, the famous independent bookstore and Berkeley icon, closed the doors of its Telegraph Avenue store in 2006. Because of Cody's iconic status in Berkeley -- it's been a commercial resident since 1956 -- the closure of the campus-area shop was a sad event for Berkeley residents for whom Cody's represented much more than just a bookstore. Cody's was a stronghold in the world of independent booksellers.
