Fourth Street in Berkeley, California

Fourth Street in West Berkeley is a tree-lined area of shops and restaurants with a surprisingly long history. The area was home to the Ohlone native people, and later, to the first immigrants who came to work the factories and mills along the shore.

Berkeley'sThe Berkeley Fourth Street of today is almost unrecognizable as a descendant of West Berkeley from years gone by. With origins as an industrial zone, the Fourth Street commercial district is now a neighborhood of upscale commerce, from clothing boutiques to high-end restaurants. Nearby areas of West Berkeley retain the original spirit of the neighborhood with light industry and artists' workshops still in residence.
