Coit Tower's name derives from Lillie Hitchcock Coit who funded the structure to her beloved city.
Telegraph Hill is named for the semaphore installed in 1850 to signal the city about incoming ships.
Inside the base of Coit Tower, view a series of large, WPA-era murals. You can also ride the elevator to the top of Coit Tower (for a small fee) to get a panoramic view of San Francisco (and beyond).
