Saints Peter and Paul Church in North Beach is a Catholic church administered by the Salesians of St. John Bosco. It was in front of this church that Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe were photographed after their nuptials (they married elsewhere).
Saints Peter and Paul sits across from Washington Square Park and the surrounding streets of North Beach restaurants and cafes. The park is more than 150 years old and has survived threats of development, underground garages, and other potentially damaging changes . . . all fought by local area residents.
In 2000, the San Francisco Chronicle wrote a tribute of sorts to Washington Square Park in its 150th anniversary year.
Walking Tour Alternatives at This Point:
The climb to Coit Tower from Washington Square Park is steeper than other points on this walk. You'll walk up Filbert to the steps that lead to Coit Tower.
Alternatives: Catch the 39-Coit bus at Washington Square Park to get up the hill. Or skip Coit Tower and head down to the Embarcadero from North Beach -- either through the Jackson Square Historic District (around Jackson & Montgomery), or down the other side of North Beach to Fisherman's Wharf via Powell or Mason.
