The stairs on Telegraph Hill gained wider notoriety as a result of Mark Bittner's book and film, The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill. Until recently, the city's parrots were gathering in various locations, taking handouts from an enthusiastic public. In the interest of the parrots, the city recently banned the public feeding to protect their well-being -- a move not popular with people who had grown accustomed to the evening feeding ritual with the beautiful birds.
The Greenwich steps will lead you to the bottom of the hill and onto the Embarcadero where you'll continue along the waterfront toward Fisherman's Wharf.
