Barbary Coast Trail
Walking the old Barbary Coast Trail gives a glimpse into a more lurid and reckless San Francisco. It's a tour to enjoy with visitors because the Barbary Coast Trail route takes you through some of the prettiest and most bustling areas of town -- with plenty of places to stop for snacks.
The Barbary Coast Trail map, provided by the San Francisco Historical Society, begins at the old U.S. Mint on 5th and Mission. It winds through Union Square and the Financial District then travels through North Beach and down to the water. If you're unfamiliar with the city, the walk is moderate through North Beach, with a gradual climb up Columbus Avenue. From Saints Peter and Paul Church at Washington Square Park it's a steeper climb up Filbert to the Filbert steps, which lead to the top of Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower. See the Saints Peter and Paul Church page in this gallery for alternate routes.
