Help San Francisco Pets This Holiday

A variety of events during the holidays benefit San Francisco Bay Area pets, from toy drives to pet photos with Santa.

If you have a favorite Santa appearance in San Francisco or around the Bay Area not listed below, please use this event submission form to send details for possible inclusion.

San Francisco Presents for Pets
Dec 13 and 14 - 10am to 3pm
The Zoo's first annual "Presents for Pets" drive in partnership with the Department of Animal Care and Control - will benefit some of the Bay Area's needy pet citizens

Macy's & SF/SPCA Holiday Windows
Nov 21 to Jan 1, 2009
The Macy's windows at Stockton and O'Farrell at Union Square, have pet-friendly displays featuring adoptable animals from the San Francisco SPCA - see above link for information and photos

Pets Unlimited Pet Tribute Mural & Donations
Bay Area muralists Jennifer Ewing and Leo Germano have created a tribute on the main staircase of the Pets Unlimited Veterinary Center - you can make a donation in honor or memory of a beloved pet
The Pets Unlimited website has additional ways you can contribute, from financial contributions to thrift store and car donations

Rocket Dog Rescue Holiday Ornament
Rocket Dog is selling holiday ornaments, the proceeds from which go to help animals in need - ornaments are $12 or two for $20 - supplies are limited
Also check Rocket Dog's website for extra adoption days in December until Christmas

San Francisco Animal Care & Control Year-Round Pet Food Drive
Animal Care & Control receives donations and distributes to Vet SOS and PAWS. Those who are homeless or unable to provide food for their pets are welcome to ask for assistance at the shelter

Hopalong's Santa Paws
Dec 13 from 3:30p to 6:30p in Lafayette
Lafayette Pet Food Express (3610 Mt. Diablo Blvd)
$15 - Get photos of your kids and/or pets taken with Santa or the Grinch, with proceeds benefitting Hopalong and Second Chance Animal Rescues - there will also be a dog trainer on hand to answer questions

Berkeley Humane Society Tail Wagg'nToy Drive
Starts Dec 5
Berkeley Humane Society is collecting toys for their shelter and foster animals - toys needed:

  • Cats: Hard toys, balls, wands, washable stuffed animals, cardboard cat scratchers
  • Dogs: soft squeaking toys, Kongs or similar chew toys, hard toys, tug and rope toys
The shelter always needs items on their regular wish list

Holiday Fostering at Peninsula Humane Society
Orientation on Dec 13, from 2p to 3p
The Peninsula Humane Society is in need of foster parents or families willing to take an adult cat into their home for at least three weeks during the holidays

Marin Humane Society - Pets of People in Need
The donation drive ends on December 12, but the Humane Society has an ongoing wish list of items it always needs.
