Nob Hill Overview
Nob Hill was the embodiment of swank in San Francisco history. Perched above Union Square, Chinatown and the world, Nob Hill preserves some of the character bred into it by the early railroad and financial barons who built their mansions on the city peak.
Despite the fact that Nob Hill houses some of the city's ritziest hotels, no neighborhood in San Francisco is an island. On one side, for instance, Nob Hill abuts the Tenderloin -- a long-time seedy area, now coming into its own swankiness. As clubs and venues bleed into the surrounding area, the line between the two neighborhoods blurs into a zone that some call the TenderNob. The nebulous boundaries on all sides make Nob Hill a mix of conventional and avant-garde.
