The Golden Gate Park Panhandle stretches parallel to Haight Street, just a few blocks below. The area north of the Panhandle has taken on the designation NoPa (North of Panhandle), with a local (and late night dining) restaurant of the same name (see Nopa Restaurant Website).

Like the land on which Golden Gate Park was landscaped in the 1870s, the Panhandle area was mostly dunes. It was home to the first trees planted in Golden Gate Park. Accessed originally by horse and carriage, then streetcar, the Panhandle is today car-free strip of green with a meandering central path -- and just one main roadway intersecting (at Masonic).

See a Map of Golden Gate Park at the west end of the Panhandle -- with map markers and photos of attractions in the park.
