This row of Cliff swallow nests -- under the eaves of a museum building -- is one example of the natural history the Bay Area Discovery Museum provides by virtue of its location. Not only is Fort Baker rich in military history of San Francisco, its proximity to Horseshoe Cove makes it viable habitat for a number of species.
A sign at the Bay Area Discovery Museum describes how these Cliff swallows return to this nesting spot every spring. And how their presence is beneficial from an insect-control standpoint. The swallows dine on mosquitoes, keeping their local insect numbers in check.
