Riding Muni Metro Trains
If you have a Muni pass, enter Muni metro stations through any entrance gate. Slide your pass into the Muni gate, and be sure to retrieve it from the reader before leaving the gate.
When paying a fare or using a BART transfer, enter the Muni gate closest to the service window. Give your transfer stub to the teller. Insert $1.50 (or $1.25 with transfer) - coins only. Take your proof of purchase from the gate as you leave (your receipt emerges from the gate).
Have your Muni pass or receipt available in case you're asked for proof of purchase.
Boarding Muni Trains
At stations, Muni has electronic displays indicating next train arrivals. Check the display on the train as it approaches -- to make sure you're getting on the correct train. Electronic displays are sometimes in error.
When boarding a Muni train at a street stop, board any car if you have a pass. If purchasing a ticket, enter through the front door of the train and pay the driver.
Muni Tips
Muni Stops: Trains have routes and stops displayed in the cars, although the print is small and difficult to read. Each Muni station is also marked with the stop name.
Muni Doors:If you're new to Muni, remember that the door-open triggers are the push bars on either side of the exit stairs. It's obvious for Muni regulars, but not always so obvious for newcomers.
Riding Muni Buses
Enter front door and pay the driver (or use your pass in the card reader). Take a transfer if necessary. The transfer will show an expiration. You can travel in any direction on Muni within the alloted time.
Be sure to check Muni weekend schedules and stops. Some bus lines do not stop at their regular weekday stops during holidays and weekends.
Next Muni: Muni launched the Next Muni service to track bus arrivals by satellite. Use Next Muni on your computer or mobile.
