Las Gallinas Wildlife Ponds
These images show the area around the Las Gallinas Valley Sanitary District, where wastewater reclamation efforts created vast wildlife ponds and salt marsh habitat for birds and other animals. A segment of the San Francisco Bay Trail also runs through this area and along the bay.
In the winter months, Las Gallinas is a favorite stop for bird watchers, since a variety of species migrating on the Pacific Flyway, make the area a fall and winter home.

Wildlife watching guidelines: Areas like Las Gallinas are sensitive bird habitats. Harassing birds in any way violates the Migratory Bird Act and carries fines. Just be sure to show respect for all birds and wildlife, give them plenty of space -- and use a long lens if you're photographing.
