Miwok Trail - Marin Headlands
When you emerge from the short shaded span, into the Gerbode Valley area, veer right on the Miwok Trail. There will be a another split shortly thereafter, with the right fork taking you to the Bobcat Trail and the Rodeo Valley Trail. For the purposes of this hike, stay left and continue on the Miwok.
You can check this National Park Service Trail Map of the Marin Headlands for a detailed view of the trails at this point.
The Miwok Name
The trail is named for the Coast Miwok -- native peoples of the Bay Area who lived in villages along the coasts long before the European settlement displaced the regions indigenous communities.
California history, for all of its fascinating aspects, is also tainted by this tragic treatment of native peoples by early settlers in the region. To have a true appreciation for the story upon which our Bay Area community was built, understanding the region's Native American history is essential.
If you're out in the Point Reyes area, the Bear Valley Visitor Center in Olema has a reconstructed Miwok village. The town's name, Olema, was taken from a nearby Miwok village named Olemaloke -- translated (roughly) to "Little Coyote."
