Miwok Trail Ascent - Marin Headlands

The first half of the hike is uphill. It's a gradual ascent up a wide path, with no steep drops. But if you're not a fan of heated walks, the hike is best done in cooler weather because of the lack of shade on the uphill portion.

Along the way, you may have a number of wildlife sightings. The most common vision is the swooping raptors over the bluffs. You'll find a variety of hawks and turkey vultures -- Red-tailed Hawks, Northern Harriers and other species.

Marin Headlands - Birds and Wildlife

The Marin Headlands are home to a variety of wildlife, from birds to coyotes, foxes and bobcats.

Depending on the time of year, the climb will also render some close-up views of swallows in their aerobatic brilliance. The beauty of hiking any hills around the Bay Area is the proximity these heights tend to give you when it comes to the flying wildlife among us. It can be simply stunning to have a Northern Harrier sweep the grass, literally below your feet, as you ascend the hill.

See a photo of a Red-shouldered Hawk, often seen around the Bay Area. Then peruse other photos in the gallery for a visual perspective of our bird diversity.

Please observe all posted signs about keeping your distance from coyotes. Coyotes can be easily habituated by well-intentioned humans -- and it does not bode well for the coyote to become too friendly with people.
