Hill 88 in the Marin Headlands
Anyone who hikes the hills and trails of the Bay Area has come upon a bunker, a fort, or -- in the case of Hill 88 -- an abandoned radar station perched above Rodeo Beach in the Marin Headlands.
The San Francisco Bay Area is dotted with relics of its military past, from gun installations to aircraft carriers to missile firing batteries like the Nike Missile Site (SF-88). The Bay Area was a heavily protected enclave, part of the coastal defense system and seacoast defense that goes back to Fort Point's construction in 1853.
The coast defense system was phased out after World War II. And Hill 88, like the other dismantled sites, remains as an artifact of that time, visited mostly by hikers who can enjoy the ghost town on the hill, juxtaposed against one of the most beautiful views in the Bay Area.
