About halfway along the Jewel Lake loop, you'll emerge into a clearing with a full view of Jewel Lake. The wildlife at the lake can range from deer to great blue herons and other waterfowl. The best deer sightings are usually just before sunset, when they come to the lake area to feed.

See photos of a variety of California waterfowl and shorebird species -- some of which can be found at Jewel Lake, especially during the winter migration.
