Art Cars at How Berkeley Can You Be?
Art cars have long been a phenomenon at Burning Man, thanks in large part to Harrod Blank who has attended Burning Man since 1994 in his art car Oh My God. Blank has documented the art car movement in several books and on film.
How Berkeley Can You Be (created by John Solomon of Caffe Venezia in Berkeley) celebrated 12 years in 2007 -- and has long supported the unique and artful expressions of these cars and artists.
Art cars are not floats. Although they are extraordinary works of painted or three-dimensional art, they must still be road-worthy and viable as vehicles.
The art ranges from painted creations to outrageous three-dimensional sculptures . . . to the even more elaborate aspirations of mutant cars. Mutant car varieties are incarnations of their own, taking on identities that conceal the vehicle upon which the art is built.
