Martinez-Benicia Rail Bridge

The Capitol Corridor train passes across the Carquinez Strait on this double-track railroad bridge. This image shows the view north to south, from the Benicia side, toward Martinez. The Mothball Fleet lies in Suisun Bay to the left in this photo (east).

Martinez is the county seat of Contra Costa, and home town of Joe DiMaggio. It's also the location of the John Muir National Historic Site -- John Muir's Victorian home on nine acres of the original 2500-acre Muir ranch.

Across the strait, Benicia, founded in 1847, was once the state capital -- for just 13 months (1853 to 1854). Shipyards and railroads are a significant part of Benicia's commercial history, as are military projects such as the Benicia Arsenal -- Benicia's stash of millions of pounds of ammunition.
