San Francisco Pride Parade 2008

The San Francisco Pride Parade in 2008 was held on the heels of the first, legal gay marriages at San Francisco City Hall and around California. As such, the parade was simultaneously celebratory and sentimental -- marking the culmination of a long civil rights struggle in marriage equality.

This photo gallery represents a cross section of the almost three-hour parade along Market Street. A wedding theme permeated the parade, well beyond the bounds of this gallery. Local politicians who've fought on the side of same-sex marriage rights were part of the procession as were thousands upon thousands of participants and spectators. Early reports suggest this was a landmark year in terms of parade attendance -- for good reason.
