Mayor Newsom

In 2004, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom ordered the city to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Four years later, he officiated at the first gay marriage in the aftermath of the California Supreme Court's landmark decision. Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin married at San Francisco City Hall -- on the evening of June 16, 2008.
