San Francisco Streetcars

The San Francisco streetcar pictured here is also known as the Boat Tram -- or Blackpool Tram No. 228. Built for one of the earliest streetcar systems (in Blackpool, England), the car now makes its way along the Embarcadero on select sunny days in San Francisco.

In 2006, the San Francisco Railway Museum opened a short distance from the Ferry Building -- on Steuart Street. The museum is a small shop and repository of information on all things streetcar in San Francisco. And, the streetcars pass directly in front where staff can identify the various historical cars running that day.

The Railway Museum is one place in town to stop in for a unique gift or souvenir. It reminds me of a small version of the Transport Museum shop in London, with its interesting selection of rail-inspired items, posters and cards.
