San Francisco Ferry Building

Located at Market Street and The Embarcadero, on San Francisco's waterfront

This guide with photos showcases the San Francisco Ferry Building, including restaurants and shops in the Ferry Building Marketplace.

The Ferry Building, built in 1898, was a major conduit for ferry passengers from around the Bay. That was prior to the construction of the two bridges -- the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge -- when auto transport became the norm.

In the 1950s, the interior was filled in to make room for office space. The 50s also brought the Embarcadero freeway which obscured the Ferry Building and Embarcadero from city views.

After the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the freeway was torn down, the waterfront revitalized, and the Ferry Building was restored to its historic beauty. It reopened in 2003.

San Francisco ferries run to and from this location.
