San Francisco Ferry Building Nave

The resurrection of the Nave, the central area, to its proper, historic beauty was just one facet of the San Francisco Ferry Building's restoration. In the 1950s, a remodel had covered the mosaic floors and demolished some aspects of the building's architectural splendor.

In 1999, the work began to uncover and fix the damage incurred by this previous remodel. The San Francisco Ferry Building reopened in 2003 with a polished, new life -- and with a commitment to local business, sustainable farming, and to a mixed use facility that houses both retail (ground level, in the Ferry Building Marketplace) and commercial office space (upper levels).

You can read more about the Ferry Building's historical restoration -- the mosaic floors, the wharf, and the clock tower -- at the San Francisco Ferry Building website. The website gives historical context and structural restoration details.

The merchants represented in this photo gallery are a small representation of the Ferry Building Marketplace -- and provide a look at the ambiance and variety of this central, social hub.
