Should San Francisco Crack Down on Street Fairs?

From Ingrid Taylar, for About.com

Arguments For

Those in favor of new restrictions say:

  • More control should be exercised over the noise and crowds.
  • Alcohol at public events leads to public drunkenness and violence.
  • Portions of public spaces are denied to minors when alcohol is served there.
  • Restrictions are needed to preserve public park land for everyone.

Arguments Against

Those against new restrictions say:

  • Increased fees and alcohol restrictions will put many of these festivals out of business. Non-profits and small organizers can't afford the price hikes, especially without revenue from alcohol sales.
  • This is a case of NIMBY (Not In My Backyard), where a few vocal residents make a case against popular, local events.
  • The city's politics and budget are factors in why these crackdowns are taking place.
  • The number of negative incidents related to these events is very small.

Where it Stands

The issue remains hot in a city where almost every summer week or weekend features a public gathering. Some city officials remain unmoved, believing the new rules benefit the community at large. Local groups are mobilizing to fight the city's new policies, but it remains to be seen how effective a grassroots campaign will be.
